AAIC 2022 | Considering non-cognitive markers in dementia

Zahinoor Ismail, MD, Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, discusses the value of moving beyond cognitive markers in dementia and additionally considering non-cognitive measures and outcomes. A wealth of evidence points to the value of assessing neuropsychiatric symptoms, which can often be the first sign of dementia. For example, a recent study showed that in patients who went on to develop Alzheimer’s disease, 30% displayed neuropsychiatric symptoms prior to cognitive changes. By incorporating behavioral changes into clinical workups, an additional at-risk population can be captured early in the disease process. This interview took place at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2022 in San Diego, CA.
