Boris Kantor, PhD, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, discusses the innovative approach of gene therapy to treat complex diseases such as Alzheimer’s, highlighting the advantage of a one-shot treatment that targets the genetic root of the disease. Prof. Kantor explains his team’s main approach, which involves epigenome editing of genes involved in Alzheimer’s disease, specifically the ApoE isoform E4, using a CRISPR-Cas-based system that can target and repress APOE4 without affecting other isoforms.
