AAIC 2023 | Challenges in diagnosing dementia in Asian countries

Xin Xu, PhD from the School of Public Health and The Second Affiliated Hospital of School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, talks about the challenges faced by clinicians in communities in China. Despite new screening tools and efforts at early identification, dementia is still severely under-diagnosed in Asian communities. This is largely due to a lack of expert availability. Language, education, and public awareness of dementia and cognitive impairment in China also provide severe problems for successful diagnosis. In elderly Asian populations these issues are not often discussed and seen as a taboo, so improved educational programs are vital to encourage proactivity within vulnerable populations. Recorded at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2023 held in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
