AAIC 2023 | APOE-induced lipid changes and Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis

Femke M Feringa, PhD, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands, has previously discussed findings from a study showing the disturbance of lipid metabolism by APOE polymorphisms. It is known that the APOE4 allele is a major risk determinant for sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This study now also shows that APOE4 disrupts the lipidome in a cell specific manner. The question of whether a disrupted lipidome plays a causal role in AD development, and the mechanism behind this, remains unanswered. This interview took place at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2023 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
