BNA 2023 | Targeting the immune system in Alzheimer’s disease

Emma Mead, PhD, Alzheimer’s Research UK Oxford Drug Discovery Institute, comments on the promise of targeting the immune system as a treatment strategy in Alzheimer’s disease, going beyond current approaches which prioritize reducing protein accumulation. As changes in immune function have been shown to occur early in the disease process and continue to drive progression throughout, targeting immune processes may aid early intervention. Additionally, there are numerous cascades and interactions that may be amenable to treatment. Dr Mead shares the common viewpoint of experts in the field, that a combination strategy, tackling numerous aspects of disease pathophysiology at one time, is likely to be the optimal approach. This interview took place at The BNA 2023 International Festival of Neuroscience in Brighton, UK.
