AAN 2023 | Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with dementia and PD and their caregivers in Peru

Monica Diaz, MD, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, discusses the findings of a pilot study conducted in Peru during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the impact of lockdown measures on caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Despite Peru’s strict lockdown, the country had the highest mortality rate in the world due to COVID-19, which highlighted the limited resources in hospitals. The study aimed to assess the level of caregiver burden during and after the lockdown and found that caregivers experienced increased levels of depression and anxiety. They also reported reduced assistance from other family members in caregiving responsibilities. Caregivers observed an increase in hallucinations and depressive symptoms in the patients they cared for. These results emphasize the need for increased support and resources for caregivers in Peru. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting 2023 in Boston, MA.
