ARUK 2023 | Role of microglia in dementia resilience and vulnerability

Amy Lloyd, PhD, University of Dundee, Dundee, UK, discusses the potential role of microglia in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) resilience and vulnerability. Evidence has shown that AD pathology can develop many years prior to the onset of clinical symptoms. In fact, post mortem studies have demonstrated the presence of significant amyloid and tau pathology in individuals who never went on to have symptoms of cognitive impairment. There is a growing interest in the role that microglia play in determining this balance between resistance and vulnerability. Given their heterogeneous phenotypes and disparate functions across the AD spectrum, the way microglia respond in a certain individual may contribute to their clinical disease manifestation.

This interview took place at the Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) Conference 2023 in Aberdeen, UK.
