AAIC 2023 | AI with advanced retinal imaging techniques to detect neurodegenerative disease risk markers

Frederique J. Hart de Ruyter, MD, from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam, Netherlands, talks about the development of advanced retinal imaging techniques in combination with artificial intelligence software to detect neurodegenerative disease risk markers. The use of hyperspectral imaging is discussed as part of a study using AI software for retinal deep phenotyping, which takes data from thousands of cases and shows differences between individuals positive or negative for amyloid pathology. Although this is still in development, it would allow label-free retinal imaging for detection of Alzheimer’s disease risk markers. Dr Hart de Ruyter also discusses her ongoing work on microglia using a different AI software to detect location and determine morphology of microglia within the retina. This interview took place at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2023 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
