AAIC 2023 | Natural killer cell integrity within Alzheimer’s disease

Paul Y Song, MD, NKGen Biotech, Santa Ana, CA, specializes in the production of autologous, non-genetically modified natural killer (NK) cells to counteract amyloid progression in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). NK cells have been found to eliminate amyloid-beta plaques within the brain and have been suggested to accelerate the recovery of microglial function through phagocytic activity, leading to cognitive improvements. Dr Song presents a novel NK cell product, named SNK01, where a patient’s NK cells are harvested from their blood, remodeled to improve NK cytotoxicity, and multiplied to generate millions of cells. Phase I investigations show promising results, with recorded reductions in CSF biomarkers and improvements in cognitive function following intravenous administration of SNK01 within all participants. Here, Dr Song highlights how this approach can overcome the deterioration of NK integrity within AD patients. This interview took place at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference® (AAIC) 2023 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
