The European Medical Information Framework-Alzheimer’s Disease (EMIF-AD) study aims to uncover diagnostic and prognostic markers for the early ‘pre-dementia’ stages of this disease, when individuals are more likely responsive to treatment. Here, Pieter Jelle Visser, MD, PhD, of VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam, Netherlands, discusses the aims, methods and results of several EMIF-AD studies, which have investigated the impact of a range of factors, including hypertension, heart failure and diabetes, on the risk of developing dementia at different ages.
