ARUK 2021 | The mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 neuropathogenesis

Markus Glatzel, MD, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany, shares the findings of a post-mortem case series from the Hamburg cohort investigating the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the central nervous system and the mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 neuropathogenesis. SARS-CoV-2 was detected in the brains of a subset of patients but could only be found in low amounts. Additionally, the results showed that neuro COVID-19 is characterized by region-specific neuroinflammatory changes, such as activation of microglia and infiltration by cytotoxic T-lymphocytes predominantly in the brainstem. This interview took place during the Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) Conference 2021.
